GenresGenres are major subject-related categories found in fiction. They are generally divided into crime/mystery, fantasy/science fiction, horror, inspirational, romance and westerns. Some libraries will remove genres from general fiction in order to make it easier for patrons to find them, so that all mysteries are shelved together, all romance are together, etc. However, this can be problematic for patrons when they are looking authors that write across more than one genre. There are many print titles that are devoted to genres within the AALS Professional Collection. Recommended titles that we carry are Genreflecting, Teen Genreflecting, Junior Genreflecting, Now Read This, Now Read This II, Romance Fiction, Hooked on Horror, The Mystery Readers’ Advisory, Book Lust series, Christian Fiction: A Guide to the Genre, Developing Chirstian Fication Collections for Children and Adults and others. If you are interested in borrowing any of these titles, and you are a library staff member within AALS, please call the AALS Office at 210/207-2609 for additional information.
