  • Prepare for the unexpected

The Art of Developing the Right Resources for Our Communities:

Defining Parameters, Deciding Specifics and Getting the Losers Out!

October 15, 2010

Henry Guerra Branch Library

7978 Military Drive West in San Antonio

9:00 - 4:00

This workshop is intended to assist librarians in defining each segment of their collection so that daily decisions become easier.  Clarity about the characteristics of library resources will enable librarians to best meet the needs of all client populations.

Participants will combine knowledge and experiences regarding materials selection and gain insight into how to develop collections that won't simply sit on the shelves.  We will also discuss those dust-gathering losers that really ought to be retired!

Guest presenter, Dr. Mary Bushing, is a library consultant and educator who has worked in every type of library from rural public libraries to research universities.  She has 40 years of experience in most aspects of library oprations from circulation to technical services as well as reference and administration.  While she has published on many topics, collection management is especially close to her heart.  She reminds us that common sense and good judgement are essential to do this job--along with a healthy sense of humor and the ability to laugh at ourselves.
