Children's LiteratureChildren’s literature is an umbrella term that usually represents a wide range of printed materials such as board books, picture books, big books, easy readers, chapter books, comic books, non-fiction, juvenile fiction, graphic novels and even into teen or young adult titles. Each group has its own defining characteristics and some can overlap into others. It may also contain media elements such as audios, DVDs, media kits, puppets, software and others.
Most children’s books can be purchased through the major vendors of Baker & Taylor, Brodart and Ingram. There are also vendors that specialize in children’s materials such as BWI, Follett, Bound to Stay Bound and Scholastic. One word of caution on ordering children’s books is to watch for bindings. Children’s books come in a variety of formats so if you need a reinforced binding, be sure to check for that before you order. A list of children’s publishers from ACQWEB is found here although it has not been updated since 2001. The AALS Professional Collection has many titles devoted to children’s literature. Some of these are Books, Babies and Libraries; Best Books for Young Adults; More Books Kids Will Sit Still For; Children’s Books and Their Creators; Best Books for Middle School and Junior High Readers; This Way to Books; The Kid’s Book Club and others. If you are interested in borrowing any of these titles, and you are a library staff member within AALS, please call the AALS Office at 210/207-2609 for additional information.
